McCants: NBA Owners Colluded To Black-Ball Me

Rashad McCants was the 14th overall pick in 2005 but hasn’t played in the NBA since 2009. He is 32, not injured, and averaged 10.0 points per game.

Why is McCants not in the NBA, you ask? Well, according to him, he’s been black-balled by the league.

“I experienced it. I know it,” McCants said on CBS Sports Radio’s Tiki and Tierney. “I’ve never been in trouble. I’ve never gotten any DUIs, never got in any fights or anything like that. There are guys who had second, third chances who have done much worse than just create soundbites. That’s the only thing that I’ve ever done is create a soundbite post-NBA.”

What was the problem, then?

“While I was in the NBA, my relationship with Khloe Kardashian created a conflict, a conflict with the executives, a conflict with the coaches, a conflict with the players,” McCants said. “And that attention that I got, it was hard to come back from once I got out of this league because I wasn’t taken as serious.”

McCants believes that NBA teams viewed him as more Hollywood than hardwood.

“It’s hard to get rid of that and come back and step in front of the boss and say, ‘I’m ready now,’” Mccants said. “They’ve already picked someone else. I had my chance to take the game seriously. But in that relationship that I chose, I didn’t know it was going to steer my into that direction. . . . To not be able to get a summer league tryout or (an invite) to training camp for no apparent reasons at all, that’s collusion.”

McCants, for what it’s worth, was the No. 1 overall pick in the BIG3 Draft in April. He will play on a team called Trilogy with Kenyon Martin, Al Harrington, James White, and Dion Glover.

McCants thinks the league will be incredibly popular.

“I believe so,” he said. “You look at the NBA Development League and other semi-pro leagues around America that haven’t really gained national attention or national traction the way that we have with the BIG3. Implementing and adding former nBA players, legendary Hall of Fame players like Julius Erving, Gary Payton, Rick Barry, Allen Iverson, Chauncey Billups – when you look at that type of addition, as a fan, you want to be there just to gain access to those guys for autograph purposes alone. I think it’s something great for the fans and exciting for basketball.”

As for the NBA, McCants has likely played his last game, but he did offer a fresh take on this year’s NBA champions.

“I don’t believe that Golden State is a super team,” McCants said. “I believe that Steph Curry and Kevin Durant are great players, I believe that Klay Thompson is an amazing shooter, and I believe that the other players are some of the best role players you’re going to find in the NBA. And they have Steve Kerr, who understands basketball. I think they’re a well-coached basketball team. From the fans’ perspective, it’s a super team. From the players’ perspective, we look at it like, ‘Man, they just know how to play. . . . I believe that wholeheartedly. Looking at the way the game was played when I was playing in the league, there was a lot more strategy, there was a lot more schemes defensively – and that is completely gone out of the league. There’s no double-teams. Russell Westbrook averages a triple-double and hasn’t been double-teamed all season. It’s unfathomable to me.”
